
The framing crew has just left the site. The electrician is pulling wire. The HVAC subcontractor is arguing about duct runs. Somewhere in the middle of all this, the plans call for decorative beams across the great room ceiling. The question every builder ends up asking at least once: when exactly do these things go in?
The short answer: it depends on the ceiling type, the beam profile, and what is happening around them. The longer answer, which is what this guide is for, depends on the sequence in the rest of the house.
The three legitimate timing windows
There are three points in a typical residential build where a faux beam install can happen without damage or rework. Each has trade-offs.
Option A: After framing, before drywall
If the beams are going to wrap around structural elements — running past ductwork, integrating with a chase, or wrapping a vault that includes the ridge — install them before the drywall goes up. The crew can fasten directly to framing, blocking can be added cleanly, and the drywallers can tape and finish right up to the beam edge.
This is also the right time for beams that need to recess partially into the ceiling plane. The drywall opening is sized for the beam and the edge is finished with a J-bead or trim, giving a flush look that is hard to achieve any other way.
Option B: After drywall, before paint and flooring
For most decorative ceiling runs that simply attach to the face of the drywall or hang from blocking above, this is the sweet spot. The drywall is complete and primed. The painters can prep and finish the beams along with the rest of the ceiling. Flooring is not yet down, so ladders and saw stations do not scratch anything expensive.
This is also the easiest time to coordinate with the electrician, because any canless downlights that need to align with the beam pattern can be cut and trimmed while the ceiling is open above.
Option C: After paint, with fixtures installed
This is the punch-list install. Common in spec homes where the buyer chose the beam upgrade late, or in custom homes where the homeowner wanted to see the room painted before committing to a beam color. The risk is that everything below the ceiling is finished, and a dropped beam or a saw slip means a repair bill.
If you have to install at this stage, use painter's tape generously on the wall, drop cloths on the floor, and have a touch-up kit and painter on standby.
Blocking above: the conversation that has to happen early
The single biggest timing mistake builders make with faux beams is forgetting the blocking. Polyurethane beams are light, but the connection between the beam and the ceiling still has to hold. The fasteners go into something, and that something should be solid wood, not just the drywall or the truss chord.

If the plans call for a beam run, the framer needs to know. A 2-by-6 or 2-by-8 block laid flat between joists at the right height gives the installer a clean target. Without it, the installer is hunting for joists with a stud finder, missing half the time, and leaving the connection weaker than it should be.
The cost of adding blocking during framing is roughly $20 to $40 per location in labor and material. The cost of retrofitting blocking after drywall is up is closer to $200 per location, plus the drywall patch and repaint.
Coordinating beam color with the rest of the palette
Polyurethane faux beams ship with a factory finish, but the homeowner may want a custom stain color. If the finish needs to be tinted on site, the painter needs the beam in hand before any color matching happens. Trying to tint a finish to match a swatch in a brochure is a gamble. The actual beam, with its actual grain depth, will read slightly different.
Order the beam at least two weeks before the install window so the painter has time to test the color on a scrap end and adjust.
Ceiling height and HVAC considerations
Beams hanging below the ceiling line eat headroom. In rooms with eight-foot ceilings, a 6-inch beam is the practical maximum if you want to keep the room from feeling cramped. In great rooms over fourteen feet, deeper beams — 8, 10, or even 12 inches — become the focal point.
HVAC ductwork that runs along the ceiling can collide with a beam run. Either the beam has to be split around the duct, or the duct has to be rerouted, or the beam has to be shallower than planned. Have this conversation with the HVAC sub before the duct is installed. It is much cheaper to drop a duct four inches than to redesign a beam layout after the sheet metal is up.
Pre-finished vs site-finished beams
Most polyurethane faux beams ship pre-finished from the factory in a range of standard colors. These are convenient, predictable, and consistent across batches. If you are on a tight schedule and the standard color works with the design, pre-finished is the right choice.
Site-finished beams are necessary when the design calls for a non-standard color, a higher sheen, or a glaze that needs to read against the surrounding trim. The painter handles these on site.
For a builder running more than two or three projects a year, it is worth keeping a small inventory of the most common pre-finished profiles on hand. The beam can go up on day one of the trim stage, and the homeowner does not have to wait four to six weeks for a custom order.
What the GC should put in the schedule
A simple line item in the build schedule protects everyone.

When this line item is missing, the beam becomes the thing that gets squeezed at the end of the schedule, and the result is rarely as clean as it should have been.
The cost of getting it wrong
A builder who installs a beam against finished flooring, only to find a wiring mistake that puts the beam half an inch off the layout, has just cost the project a full day of labor plus a refinish on the floor. The cost of having the conversation early is essentially zero.
The cost of having the conversation late is whatever the rework costs.
For the builder, the best time to install a faux beam in a new build is the time that lets the rest of the trades do their work around it without rework. For most projects, that is after drywall and before paint. For beams that integrate with the structure, it is before drywall. For punch-list upgrades, it is at the end — but with protection down and a touch-up painter on standby.
Get the sequence right, and the beam becomes the easiest trade on the job site.
