Beams get damaged. It happens on every project, sometimes during installation and sometimes years later during maintenance work. A ladder leans the wrong way during a ceiling fan replacement, a child throws a toy, a sofa is maneuvered through a doorway and clips the beam corner. The damage is usually minor — a chip 5 mm across, a scuff 30 mm long, a small impact crack — but it stands out on a freshly finished ceiling like a stain on a white shirt.

The instinct is to call the original installer or to order a replacement beam section. Both are expensive and time-consuming solutions for what is often a 20-minute repair. A properly designed touch-up kit handles the problem on site, and a competent handyman or maintenance technician can produce a repair that's invisible from normal viewing distance.

For property managers, hotel maintenance teams, renovation contractors, and homeowners, a touch-up kit is one of those things you don't think about until you need it. Then it's the most valuable thing in the truck.

What's in a standard touch-up kit

Every beam we ship can be ordered with a matching touch-up kit built around the specific color, sheen, and texture of the original beam. The kit is not a generic "medium brown" stain — it's the exact formula from the original production batch, mixed fresh for the kit order.

A standard kit contains:

  • 30 ml of color-matched stain or paint in a sealed bottle with an eyedropper cap for precise dispensing
  • 30 ml of clear topcoat in the same sheen as the original beam (matte, satin, semi-gloss)
  • 2 ml of grain wash for multi-tone finishes — the dark glaze that sits in the embossed grain pores
  • Two 25 mm foam brushes for stain application
  • Two 12 mm artist's brushes for detail work and grain matching
  • One sheet of 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper
  • One lint-free wiping cloth
  • One wooden stir stick
  • One instruction card with the exact mixing ratios and application sequence for that beam

The kit ships in a small cardboard box (approximately 200 x 150 x 60 mm) that fits easily in a maintenance closet or a contractor's tool cabinet. The bottles are sealed and the sandpaper is protected, so kits have a shelf life of at least two years when stored at room temperature.

How the color matching works

When we finish a beam, we archive the formula in our color database. Each beam carries a small barcode on the back or end face that maps to the formula. When you reorder a touch-up kit, we pull the formula, mix a fresh batch using the same raw materials and proportions, and ship it. The kit is matched to the original beam within 1–2% color tolerance on a spectrophotometer — close enough that a normal observer won't see the repair under any normal viewing condition.

For single-tone finishes, the repair process is straightforward: apply stain, let it dry, apply topcoat, done.

For multi-tone finishes, the kit includes two separate bottles: one for the base stain and one for the grain glaze. The base stain covers the damaged area to the same depth of color as the surrounding surface. While the stain is still slightly tacky, the grain glaze is stippled into it with a small brush to recreate the wood-grain pattern. The glaze is darker than the base stain and sits in the embossed grain pores, creating the characteristic depth of a multi-tone finish.

With practice, a careful technician can rebuild a damaged area so convincingly that the repair is invisible even under close inspection. The second or third repair is always cleaner than the first.

Common repair scenarios and how to handle them

The most common damage type is a chip on a beam corner, usually caused during move-in or furniture installation. The repair sequence for a chip deeper than 1 mm is: clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol, fill with a color-matched two-part epoxy filler, let it cure fully (at least 30 minutes), sand flush with 600-grit, apply the stain with a small brush, stipple the grain glaze while the stain is still tacky, let the color coats cure for 30 minutes, apply the topcoat in two thin passes. Total time including cure time: 45 to 60 minutes.

A surface scratch that hasn't broken through the color coat is even faster. In most cases, a light scuff with 600-grit paper followed by a single thin coat of topcoat restores the sheen. No stain needed.

A scuff mark — a dark line where something was dragged across the surface — often hasn't damaged the finish at all. It may just be a smear of dust and oils. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth removes most scuffs without any refinishing.

A crack in the beam body (as opposed to a chip in the surface) is more serious and may indicate an impact or stress point. Small cracks (under 50 mm long, not through the full thickness of the beam) can be repaired with a two-part epoxy adhesive injected into the crack, then touched up with stain and topcoat. Cracks that are structural — through the full thickness, or accompanied by any deflection — require beam replacement.

The limitations of touch-up kits

Touch-up kits handle surface damage well. They don't handle structural damage, deep cracks through the full beam profile, or large areas of missing material. For those cases, the beam section needs to be replaced.

We also don't recommend using touch-up kits for repairs on highly visible beam faces in high-end commercial spaces — hotel lobbies, luxury retail, premium restaurants — without a test first. The repair quality depends on the technician's skill with a small brush, and a poorly executed repair on a prominent beam face is worse than no repair at all. For premium commercial spaces, we recommend a professional finisher.

For multi-tone repairs on dark-stained beams, the repair quality is best assessed after the topcoat has fully cured (4 hours after application). Wet stain looks darker than dry stain, and it's easy to over-apply thinking the color isn't dark enough. Let it dry before judging.

Project-level kits for commercial applications

For commercial projects with 50 or more beams — hotels, office fit-outs, restaurant chains — we recommend a project-level touch-up kit that includes enough material for approximately 50 repairs. The project kit is sized to handle the typical punch-out work after installation, plus a reserve for future maintenance.

The project kit includes:

  • 250 ml of each stain and glaze color
  • 500 ml of topcoat
  • 20 foam brushes and 20 detail brushes
  • Four sheets of 600-grit sandpaper
  • Four microfiber cloths
  • Printed instruction manual with the formula reference numbers, batch date, and color chip

For ongoing property maintenance, we recommend holding two project kits in the maintenance shop: one for the original beam color and one for any replacement or additional beam that ships later. Replacement material may have shifted slightly in tone due to a different production batch, so a separate kit matched to the replacement is helpful for perfect blending.

Ordering and lead times

Standard touch-up kits ship within 3 business days for colors in our formula database. Custom-matched kits for colors outside our database take 5 to 7 business days because we need to prepare the formula.

Touch-up kits can be ordered with the original beam shipment (free shipping within the same consignment) or separately (shipping charged at cost). For projects in remote locations, we strongly recommend ordering at least two kits upfront — the cost is low, and the alternative is a long wait if something gets damaged a year or two after installation when the original supplier may have moved on.

Send the beam order number (or the color reference if the order number isn't available) and we'll ship a matched kit within three business days.

For property management companies and hotel groups managing multiple properties, we offer an annual touch-up kit subscription. The subscription delivers a fresh kit each year, matched to the current beam formula, and stored at the property. This means the kit is always available when needed and the formula is always current. Contact our sales team for subscription pricing.
