
Shop drawings are where an architectural concept becomes an installer's instruction manual. For PU resin decorative faux beam installations, the shop drawings translate the reflected ceiling plan into individual beam pieces, fixings, joint locations, and sequence information. This article describes how shop drawings are produced, what they contain, and how the whole project team uses them.
The Difference Between a Drawing Set and Shop Drawings
Architectural drawings and reflected ceiling plans show the design intent: beam layout, scale, and relationship to other ceiling elements. They do not contain the level of detail required to manufacture and install each beam.
Shop drawings add the manufacturing and installation detail. They show each individual beam piece dimensioned end to end, joint and splice locations, fixing method and fastener positions, connection to adjacent building elements, sequence of installation, and field measurement requirements before production.


What a Beam Shop Drawing Contains
A complete beam shop drawing typically includes these sheets.
Profile Sheet. The cross-section of the beam at 1:1 scale, showing all external dimensions, wall thickness for hollow profiles, and any special features.
Setting-Out Sheet. A plan view or elevation view showing the location of each beam in the ceiling, with dimensions from fixed reference points. Each beam is given a unique identifier used throughout the drawing set and on physical piece labels.
Individual Beam Sheets. For each unique beam, a detailed drawing showing total length and joint locations, cut angles at ends, fixing point positions, special features like notches or holes, and which faces are finished and to what standard.
Fixing Detail Sheets. Cross-section details showing how the beam connects to the building structure for each fixing method used.
Joint Detail Sheets. Details of how beam segments are joined at splices, scarf joints, and connections to end caps or return pieces.
Sequence Sheet. A simplified plan or isometric sketch showing the recommended order of installation.
Coordinating With Other Trades
Shop drawings are most valuable when coordinated with the work of other trades before they are finalized. The coordination process includes the structural engineer (confirming fixing methods are appropriate for the substrate), mechanical and electrical contractors (identifying any penetrations through beams), ceiling contractor (confirming beam installation sequence is compatible with ceiling board installation), and fire protection engineer (confirming sprinkler head positions and clearances).
Common Drawing Errors and How to Avoid Them
The most common shop drawing errors are missing dimensions (every beam dimension not obvious from the architectural drawings must be shown), joint conflicts (two joints positioned too close together or a joint landing at a fixing point), fixing point on finished face (fixings always go through the back, top, or hidden face), and coordinate system errors (dimensions that do not add up or contradict the architectural drawings). These errors are caught in the approval review if the reviewer knows what to look for.
Custom shop drawings are an investment in a clean installation. The hours spent producing and approving them are recovered many times over in reduced site problems and faster installation.
