A doorway is one of the most overlooked opportunities for architectural detail in a home. The door itself gets attention; the header beam above it is usually just a flat painted board that nobody notices. But a curved header beam — something that acknowledges the opening it spans — transforms a doorway from a hole in the wall into an architectural event.

What a curved header beam does

A curved header beam spans an interior doorway (or window) and curves at the ends, typically at a radius of 2 to 4 inches, to create a visual termination that returns into the wall. The effect is of a beam that has been designed specifically for the opening it crosses — not a generic piece of lumber that happens to be above the door.

The curve at the ends of the header is the defining feature. Without the curve, the header is just a flat board — a 2x10 or 2x12 cut to the width of the opening. With the curve, the header reads as a crafted element with intentional proportions and a sense of finish.

Curved headers are particularly effective in rooms with other architectural beams. A curved header in a room with straight ceiling beams creates a visual connection between the ceiling and the door openings, making the doorway feel like it belongs to the same design vocabulary as the ceiling.

Geometry and proportions

The key dimension of a curved header is the projection: how far the beam extends beyond the door frame on each side. Too little projection — less than 3 to 4 inches — and the beam looks like it was sized to fit the opening rather than designed to span it. Too much projection — more than 12 inches — and the beam overwhelms the door.

For interior residential doorways (typically 30 to 36 inches wide), a projection of 4 to 6 inches on each side is appropriate. The beam width is typically 4 to 6 inches — matching the proportions of the room's ceiling beams if there are any, or proportional to the door height if the beam stands alone.

The curve at the end of the beam is a quarter-round or compound curve. A quarter-round curve (radius = beam width) creates a simple, clean termination. A compound curve — a smaller radius at the face transitioning to a larger radius behind — creates a more refined, more detailed appearance.

The beam height is typically 6 to 8 inches for residential doorways and 8 to 12 inches for wide openings or commercial doorways. A taller beam makes a stronger architectural statement but requires more ceiling space above the opening.

Installation above doorways

The header beam is mounted to the wall surface above the door frame, not to the door frame itself. The mounting surface must be structurally adequate — typically the wall studs behind the drywall, or a continuous blocking board installed between the studs at the header height.

For new construction or renovation where the blocking can be installed before the walls are finished, we recommend a 1x4 or 1x6 furring strip behind the drywall, running the full width of the beam location. This provides continuous screw-holding capacity along the entire beam length.

For existing construction, the beam is mounted with toggle bolts or wood screws into the studs, with construction adhesive providing the continuous bond. Toggle bolts are used where no stud falls at the mounting point; wood screws are used where a stud is accessible.

The beam is mounted first, then the door casing is installed up to the beam. The casing is trimmed to fit under the beam, with a small reveal (1/8 inch) between the casing and the beam face. This creates the appearance of the beam floating above the casing rather than resting on it.

Header beams with mantel integration

In doorways adjacent to a fireplace, the header beam can extend to become a fireplace mantel — a single continuous beam that spans both the doorway and the fireplace, with a curve over each opening. This is a more ambitious design statement that requires careful coordination between the doorway and fireplace locations.

The integrated header-mantel is specified as a single beam with two curved sections: one over the doorway and one over the fireplace. The span between the two curved sections may be supported by corbels, brackets, or structural posts, or it may be a continuous beam that spans the full distance between the two openings.

This approach works best when the doorway and fireplace are on the same wall and within 6 to 8 feet of each other. Wider separations make the beam span too long and the corbels or brackets too small to look proportional.

Commercial doorway applications

In commercial interiors — restaurants, hotels, retail spaces — curved header beams above doorways serve both aesthetic and wayfinding purposes. A distinctive header over an entrance marks the threshold and signals a transition between spaces.

The scale is larger in commercial applications: 8 to 12 inches in height, with projections of 8 to 12 inches on each side. The larger scale is necessary for the beam to read as significant against tall commercial doorways and generous ceiling heights.

Finish matching and specification

The finish on a doorway header beam should match the room's ceiling beams if there are any. The same wood tone and texture applied to both the ceiling beams and the header creates visual coherence.

For rooms without ceiling beams, the header beam stands alone. In this case, the finish should complement the room's other materials: the door finish, the floor finish, and the wall color. A walnut header in a room with walnut flooring and dark trim creates material continuity. A white header in a room with white trim and light walls provides a subtle detail that doesn't compete with the room's other elements.
