The two-piece polyurethane slip-on beam sleeve is one of the most practical beam products on the market. Each piece is light enough for one person to handle, the two halves fit together with a clean seam, and the finished installation looks like a solid timber beam that has always been part of the room. For homeowners and contractors alike, the sleeve approach removes most of the friction from beam renovations.

The principle is straightforward. The existing structural member stays in place. Two pre-finished PU halves fit around it, one on each side, and lock together along their long edges. The result is a hollow shell that hides the existing member and gives the room the appearance of a freshly installed decorative beam.

Why the Two-Piece Design Works

A single-piece sleeve that drops down over the existing beam is possible in theory, but it is awkward in practice. The sleeve has to be lifted over the end of the existing beam and walked along the run, which requires the sleeve to be long enough to clear the entire span. For long runs, the sleeve becomes unwieldy on a ladder.

The two-piece design solves the handling problem. Each half is half the weight and half the length, which makes it manageable for one person. The two halves fit together around the existing member, so the installer does not have to slide anything along the run. The result is a faster, safer installation that requires fewer hands.

The seam between the two halves is usually designed to fall along one of the lower edges of the beam, where it is hidden in the shadow line. The seam closes tightly when the two halves are fastened together, and a small amount of color-matched caulk makes it disappear entirely.

Measuring the Existing Beam

Measure the existing beam at several points along its run. Heights and widths can vary along a long beam, especially for older wooden members that have sagged or twisted over time. Use the largest measurement in each direction when ordering, and add a few millimeters of clearance to allow the sleeve halves to fit without forcing.

Mark the location of any protrusions on the existing member. Bolt heads, hanger plates, splice plates, junction boxes, and lighting conduit all add to the effective dimensions and need to be accounted for in the sleeve design. Most manufacturers will incorporate these features into the sleeve pattern if you provide accurate measurements and clear photos.

Measure the length of the run and add a few centimeters of clearance at each end. The sleeve should extend slightly past the existing member to hide any uneven cuts or end conditions and to give the finished beam a clean termination at the wall.

Choosing the Right Profile

The profile of the sleeve should match the style of the room and the character of the existing member. Smooth, flat-faced sleeves work in contemporary interiors. Hand-hewn sleeves with visible tool marks work in rustic and farmhouse spaces. Reclaimed timber profiles with knots, cracks, and weathering work in industrial and adaptive reuse projects.

The depth of the sleeve is usually determined by the depth of the existing member, plus a small clearance margin. The width can be either matched to the existing member or increased to give the finished installation more visual weight in the room.

Color is the other major choice. Most manufacturers offer a range of standard finishes, and some will do custom color matching against a sample for an additional charge. Bring a sample of the wood tone you are trying to match elsewhere in the room, or take a clear photo in natural light for the manufacturer to reference.

Preparing for Installation

Wipe down the existing beam to remove dust, oil, and any loose material. Tighten any loose bolts or fasteners, and address any sharp edges that could damage the sleeve from the inside. Mark the location of any services that need to remain accessible, such as junction boxes or valve covers.

Pre-cut any openings needed in the sleeve for junction boxes, light fixtures, or other elements. Lay the sleeve half on a pair of sawhorses, mark the cutout carefully, and use a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade for the cleanest cut. Measure twice and cut once is especially important here, because mistakes in a PU sleeve are difficult to patch invisibly.

Have all of the necessary fasteners, brackets, and clips on hand before starting the installation. The two-piece design uses clips or brackets that join the two halves together and secure the assembly to the existing member. Most kits include the necessary hardware, but it is worth confirming before ordering.

Installation

Start with the lower half of the sleeve. Lift it up to the existing beam and position it where the finished beam will sit. Rest it on a temporary support, like a beam saddle or a stack of lumber, with the open side facing the existing member.

Lift the upper half of the sleeve up to the existing beam and position it above the lower half. The two halves should meet cleanly along their long edges. Fasten them together with the included clips or brackets, working from one end of the run to the other.

Most two-piece sleeves use a clip system that pulls the two halves together along the seam. The clips engage with a satisfying click as they lock into place, and a small set screw or snap fit holds them there. Check each clip as you go to make sure it is fully engaged before moving to the next.

Once the two halves are clipped together, secure the assembly to the existing member with the included brackets. The brackets typically screw into the existing member from inside the sleeve, so the fasteners are not visible from outside. Tighten the bracket screws until the sleeve is held firmly against the existing member, but do not over-tighten, which can dimple the foam.

Finishing the Seams

The seams between the two halves are the most visible part of the installation, so they deserve careful attention. Run a small bead of color-matched caulk along each seam and smooth it with a damp finger or a small plastic spreader. Wipe away any excess before it cures, because cured caulk is very difficult to remove from a textured PU surface without damaging the printed grain.

For sleeves with deep grain texture, the seams may need additional work to blend the texture across the joint. A fine artist brush and a small amount of stain can be used to draw faint grain lines that bridge the seam. Practice on a piece of cardboard first to get the line weight and spacing right.

End caps press into the open ends of the sleeve and hide the cut edges. Most kits include end caps sized to the specific profile. Press each cap into the open end of the sleeve and secure it with a small amount of construction adhesive. Wipe away any excess adhesive immediately with a damp cloth.

Where the Two-Piece Design Excels

The two-piece design is particularly valuable in renovations where the existing beam is close to a wall or another obstruction. A single-piece sleeve would be impossible to install in some of these situations, because there is no room to slide the sleeve over the end of the existing beam. The two-piece design assembles around the existing member, so it works in tight spaces where a single-piece sleeve would not fit.

The two-piece design also works well for installations that need to happen in stages. One half can be installed and secured while the other half is being prepared, which is useful in occupied spaces where the work needs to be done in short sessions rather than in one continuous block.

Long-Term Maintenance

A properly installed two-piece sleeve should last as long as the sleeve material itself. The PU foam is resistant to moisture and most household chemicals, and the factory-applied finish is designed to withstand normal indoor conditions without special maintenance.

Dust the beam occasionally with a microfiber cloth to keep the surface clean. Avoid using household cleaners that contain solvents, which can damage the factory finish. A damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap is usually sufficient for any cleaning beyond routine dusting.

If a sleeve ever needs to be removed for access to the existing member or the services running along it, the installation can be reversed in the same order it was installed. Remove the end caps, release the clips joining the two halves, and lift each half off separately. Store the halves in a safe location until they can be reinstalled.
