The skill lies in understanding how to coordinate that two-person effort effectively.
Communication protocols need to be established before the first beam leaves the ground. Establish simple, clear verbal cues: "Ready," "Lifting," "Hold," "Adjust left," "Adjust right," "Down," and "Set." These six commands cover the full range of positioning needs and eliminate ambiguity during the moments when both installers are focused on physical coordination rather than elaborate explanations. A miscommunicated "a little more" can mean the difference between a perfectly centered beam and one that needs to come back down for repositioning.
The approach to getting the beam from horizontal storage to vertical or elevated position depends heavily on the room layout. In most cases, one person takes the center of the beam while the other takes one end. This creates a stable three-point lift configuration that prevents the beam from sagging or flexing excessively in the middle. Once upright, the end person can move to a position beneath the intended attachment point while the center person walks the beam upward along the wall or ladder.

For vaulted or very high ceilings, consider using a temporary support system rather than attempting to hold the beam in place for extended periods. A simple T-brace made from a scrap piece of dimensional lumber, positioned beneath the center of the beam, can hold the weight while both installers work on marking and preparing attachment points. This approach reduces fatigue and allows for more precise alignment work without the pressure of holding a beam overhead.
When the beam reaches its final position, the initial attachment strategy matters enormously. Do not apply adhesive to the full length of the beam before lifting. Instead, apply a small amount of adhesive to the attachment surfaces, lift the beam into position, and secure it temporarily with a few screws driven into the structural backing. Once you are confident in the alignment from floor-level observation, then apply the full adhesive application and complete the permanent fastening.
Corner installations involving two beams meeting at a 90-degree angle require particular attention to sequencing. Always install the first beam fully before attempting to position the second. Trying to handle both beams simultaneously while also wrestling with corner joint alignment is a recipe for adhesive smears on finished surfaces and misaligned joints. The second beam should be test-fitted without adhesive first, marking the cut lines and joint interface clearly, then removed for adhesive application and final installation.

For beams that span from wall to wall, start with the wall-end attachment on one side, secure that end firmly, then work outward along the beam length to the opposite wall. This sequential approach prevents the mid-span section from sagging or bowing while you work. Using a support bracket or a second installer at the mid-span point during the wall-to-wall installation provides insurance against unexpected flex.
The adhesive curing phase deserves special attention with long beams. Temperature fluctuations in the room, HVAC system operation, and even strong sunlight through windows can cause expansion or contraction during the critical curing period. Maintaining consistent room temperature and keeping the beam shielded from direct airflow for the first few hours after installation produces cleaner results. If the beam was stored in a cool garage before installation, allow it to acclimate to room temperature for at least an hour before applying adhesive.
Two-person installation of large beams ultimately comes down to planning before the lift, communication during the positioning, and patience during the curing phase. The visual impact of a beautifully installed ten-foot or twelve-foot beam justifies every moment of careful coordination. These beams become the room's architectural centerpiece, visible every day for years to come.
