Technical Engineer perspective Perspective

When we designed the hollow profile, we weren't trying to make a beam - we were trying to solve a logistics problem. Real timber beams of any meaningful cross-section weigh between 8 and 14 pounds per linear foot. A 20-foot solid cedar beam needs two people, a pickup truck, and usually a structural engineer to confirm the ceiling can carry the load. Our hollow polyurethane beam at the same visual dimensions weighs 1.6 pounds per foot. That changes everything about who can install it, where it can go, and how many you can ship in a single container.

Engineering Details

The U-channel cross-section is the key. Three closed faces plus an open back means the beam mounts directly to a continuous wood cleat or metal track that's been leveled and screwed into the ceiling joists. The beam then slides over the cleat and is secured with a few trim screws through the side walls into the cleat - completely hidden once installed. We tested this mounting method at our facility with a 24-foot span under simulated seismic load. The cleat took the stress, the beam stayed pristine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are faux wood beams realistic looking?

Yes, our faux wood beams feature hand-carved textures and multi-step finishing that captures every detail of authentic aged wood. Most people cannot tell the difference.

How much do these beams weigh?
