Installation Notes

Three things matter for a coastal installation that don't matter inland. First, use only stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners - the salt will eat standard zinc-plated screws in three years. Second, leave a 3mm gap at every joint to allow for thermal expansion; the closed-cell polyurethane expands about 1mm per meter per 10°C temperature change, which is small but enough to buckle a tight joint. Third, plan for a finish recoat at year five, even if the beam itself looks perfect. The finish takes the UV damage; the beam underneath is fine.

What We've Learned

The early outdoor beams we sold used a finish that looked great in the showroom but couldn't handle sustained UV. After about three years at the beach, we'd get calls about chalking and color fade. We reformulated the topcoat in 2019 with a higher concentration of HALS (hindered amine light stabilizer) and a UV-absorbing package. The new finish has held up on test fences in Florida and the Mediterranean for five years with minimal visible change. We're still learning - we just installed a test fence in Oman to see how it handles extreme UV plus extreme heat - but the trajectory is good.

Design Compatibility

The outdoor-rated profile works on porches, verandas, covered patios, pergolas with proper roof protection, and soffit areas. It does NOT work for fully exposed structural applications where the beam would be in direct weather 24/7 - that's a different product category entirely. The rule of thumb I give customers: if a human would be uncomfortable standing under that beam in a rainstorm without an umbrella, the beam is in the wrong application. Use it in covered or semi-covered spaces and you'll get decades of service.
