Why Polyurethane Works
Closed-cell polyurethane doesn't absorb moisture, which is the critical property for kitchen installations. Real wood beams in kitchens develop problems over time - the wood expands and contracts with humidity cycles, the finish degrades from vapor exposure, and the surface can harbor cooking residue in the grain. Polyurethane resists all of these. A quick wipe with a damp cloth handles most spills. The finish doesn't degrade from kitchen vapors the way wood finishes do.
Installation Notes
If you're installing a beam directly above a cooktop or range, leave at least 36 inches of clearance between the heat source and the beam. Polyurethane handles normal kitchen temperatures fine, but direct radiant heat from a gas cooktop can cause issues over time. For ceiling-mounted pendants or lights integrated with the beam, use LED bulbs exclusively - the lower heat output protects both the beam finish and the surrounding structure.
Finish Selection
Specify a matte or satin finish rather than high gloss for kitchen beams. Matte finishes hide minor surface variations and don't show water spots or fingerprints the way gloss finishes do. Our kitchen-grade finish is the same as our standard finish in formulation - the matte vs gloss choice is a sheen level, not a protective property difference. Both perform the same in terms of durability; the choice is purely aesthetic.
Ventilation
Good range hood ventilation isn't just about keeping your kitchen smelling fresh - it directly affects the longevity of everything in the kitchen, including the ceiling beams. A properly sized range hood that actually captures cooking vapors (not just recirculates them) will dramatically extend the life of any finish in the kitchen. If you're investing in nice ceiling beams, invest equally in good ventilation. The two work together.
