Beach House Design

Beach houses typically have larger open spaces than inland homes of the same size - the views and the casual entertaining style demand it. Beams in beach houses need to span these larger spaces without intermediate supports. Our longer-length options work well for beach house applications. The finish should be light enough to reflect the bright coastal light but warm enough to feel welcoming rather than clinical.

Color Palette

Coastal design palettes typically include: pale woods (white oak, driftwood, weathered pine), soft whites and creams, gentle blues and greens, sandy beiges, and weathered grays. The beachwood finish fits within this palette - it's a pale, slightly weathered tone that works with the broader coastal vocabulary. Bold or dark beam finishes would feel out of place in most coastal interiors.

Indoor-Outdoor Flow

Coastal homes often blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces. Beams can extend from interior to covered outdoor spaces, creating visual continuity between the two. The same beam profile used on a porch ceiling and the adjacent interior ceiling makes both spaces feel larger and more connected. This requires the outdoor-rated beam formulation, but the visual continuity is worth the specification effort.

Performance Expectations

Beams in coastal environments need to last despite the harsh conditions. Our coastal formulations include UV-resistant finishes, moisture-resistant cores, and the option for marine-grade fasteners. With proper specification, a coastal beam should last 15-20 years without significant maintenance - just the finish recoating that coastal environments always require. Cheaper materials would need replacement multiple times in the same period.
