Custom Color Swatch Options for Polyurethane Faux Wood Ceiling Beams

Why swatches matter more than digital references

Color management on screens has improved significantly over the past decade, but it still drifts between devices, operating systems, browsers, and lighting conditions. A Pantone reference shown on a designer monitor in a daylight office will look different on a project manager's laptop at home, and different again on the tablet the client uses in the showroom. The drift accumulates through the approval chain, and the beam arrives at the site in a tone that's close to but not exactly what the designer expected.

A physical swatch eliminates this drift. The swatch is a physical object with a defined, measurable spectral reflectance. Whether you view it under 3000K halogen, 2700K LED, or D65 standardized daylight, it shows the same color — and it shows that same color the finished beam will show.

The embossing is equally important. Polyurethane beams have a wood-grain texture that catches and scatters light. On a flat monitor, the texture is invisible. On a swatch, it's right there, and you can see exactly how the grain will read across a 4-meter beam run, how the highlights move as you walk through the room, and how the texture interacts with the wall color.

Swatch sizes and what each is best for

We offer three swatch sizes depending on the decision being made:

The 100 x 100 mm swatch is ideal for initial color narrowing. At this size, the swatch is large enough to read the color clearly but small enough to hold against a wall sample or a fabric swatch without blocking too much of the reference. Designers use these when comparing 4–6 candidate colors against the project's material palette.

The 200 x 200 mm swatch is the workhorse for actual color approval. At this size, the grain texture is clearly visible and the swatch can be evaluated in the context of a room setting. This is the size we recommend for the formal color approval step.

The 300 x 300 mm swatch is the final pre-production check. It includes a corner section of the beam profile — not just the flat face but the actual cross-section shape — so designers can evaluate how the grain wraps around the corner and how the profile reads at a normal viewing angle. We recommend this size for premium residential and hospitality projects where the beam is a prominent design element.

Each swatch is finished on a flat sample of the actual beam substrate — same density, same primer, same color coats, same topcoat. The swatch isn't a printed approximation or a painted piece of MDF; it's a fragment of the beam itself.

Our standard color library

Our finishing library contains 35 stock stain tones and 20 stock paint colors, all available as swatches with a 3-business-day lead time. The stock library is the result of five years of curation based on actual designer and architect specifications. We update it every January with new tones that have gained traction in the market.

Designer White, Simply White, Swiss Coffee, Pale Oak, Revere Pewter, Mindful Grey, Hale Navy, Iron Ore, Black Magic, and Urbane Bronze, among others.

Two new additions to the library this year are Coastal Sand (a warm putty tone that sits between natural oak and driftwood) and Stonewash (a cool grey with a subtle green undertone that's been particularly popular in Scandinavian and coastal projects).

Custom color swatches

For projects outside the stock library, we create custom swatches from a designer-supplied reference. The process begins with our lab receiving the reference — a Pantone number, a RAL code, a manufacturer color name, or a physical sample — and mixing a candidate formula.

We apply the candidate to a 200 x 200 mm sample and photograph it under three standardized lighting conditions (D65 daylight, 2700K warm white, and 3000K halogen). The photos are emailed to the designer for an initial check. If the photos look promising, we send the physical swatch by courier for in-room evaluation.

Most projects approve on the first or second pass. A few require a third pass, usually when the room has unusual lighting — a room with predominantly north-facing windows, a room with significant artificial light at multiple color temperatures, or a room with highly reflective finishes that shift the perceived color of everything in it.

Custom swatch development typically takes 5 to 7 business days for the first pass. For colors that require two or three formula iterations, the total development time is typically 10–14 business days.

The cost for a custom swatch is modest — usually under $50 per 200 x 200 mm chip including courier shipping. For projects with multiple color candidates, we recommend ordering 4–6 swatches at once and letting the designer narrow the field in the actual space before committing to a final formula.

Multi-tone swatches

Solid-color swatches are useful for narrowing down a hue, but multi-tone finishes need their own evaluation because the layering only reads correctly when the swatch is large enough to show the full pattern. A small chip can show the colors but not the depth and interplay of a multi-tone finish.

For multi-tone approval, we send 200 x 200 mm swatches with the complete multi-layer finish applied: base stain, grain wash, and glaze. The grain pattern is clearly visible at that scale, and the depth of the finish reads the way it will on the final beam.

Multi-tone swatches are made-to-order for each project because the layering can be adjusted to the designer's preferences. Some designers want high-contrast grain that catches dramatic highlights. Others want a subtle grain that's only visible from close range. The swatch process is where those choices get made, which is why we don't offer standard multi-tone library colors — each project has its own ideal balance.

Storing swatches for future reference

We keep the formula on file for every approved swatch, indexed by project name and designer. Five years after the original order, a reorder of the same color in the same finish is still possible from the archived formula. The reorder ships with a fresh sample chip so the client can confirm the formula hasn't drifted.

For design studios working on multiple projects in the same development or hotel chain, this formula continuity is valuable. The lobby beams in building A and the clubhouse beams in building B can share the same finish with no visible difference, even if the orders are placed a year apart.

We photograph the swatch under the specified lighting and provide a detailed report on how the color is expected to read. This service is particularly useful for large commercial projects where the lighting is specified before the beams are ordered.
