A hotel lobby is the only room where the design has to communicate to a constantly rotating audience of strangers, every one of whom is forming an opinion about the property within the first thirty seconds. That opinion is shaped overwhelmingly by the ceiling, because it's the surface the eye lands on when a guest steps off the elevator or through the front door. A flat lobby ceiling reads as competent. A lobby with a grand arched beam curving overhead reads as curated, considered, and worth the room rate. The difference between those two impressions is roughly the cost of an arch and a day of install.
PU faux wood has changed what's possible at the lobby ceiling. A solid timber arch of the proportions hotel lobbies call for would require laminated stock, heavy lifting equipment, and a joinery shop working to the construction schedule. Hotel lobbies are larger than residential great rooms, so the arches that work in them have different proportional demands. A residential arch with a span of 3 m and a rise of 300 mm reads correctly in a 3.5 m ceiling. The same proportions in a 10 m lobby with a 6 m ceiling would read as a thin line.
Hotel-scale arches typically use these proportions:

Why PU faux wood suits hotel renovations specifically
Hotel renovations have a particular set of constraints that PU faux wood addresses well:
- Tight schedules. Hotels often renovate in compressed windows between high seasons. PU arches install in days rather than weeks, which matters when every night the property is closed costs revenue.
- Operational ceilings. Most hotel structures have services running above the lobby ceiling — HVAC, plumbing, electrical, sometimes fire suppression. PU arches are light enough to install around existing services without requiring ceiling reconstruction.

The combination of these constraints is why PU has largely won the hotel lobby market for curved ceiling work. Solid timber still has a place in heritage restorations and ultra-luxury properties where budget is unlimited. For everything else, PU delivers the result.
Coordinating with brand standards
Hotel brands have material standards that properties have to follow. Most brands specify the wood tone, the finish sheen, and the profile geometry in detail. PU faux wood factories work with a number of major hotel brands directly, and the catalog often includes "brand standard" finishes that align with established palettes.
For independent hotels and boutique properties, the finish and profile are open. Most projects end up specifying one of three directions:
- Warm and traditional, with a medium-tone oak or walnut arch, often paired with plaster walls and stone flooring.
- Contemporary and recessive, with a weathered or grey-toned arch that doesn't dominate the lobby's other features.
- High-contrast and architectural, with a dark espresso arch against a pale ceiling, which reads as the strongest statement of the three.

- Schedule the arch delivery to coincide with the section closure window. PU arches are flat-packed for shipping and assembled on site, so the staging area can be modest.

- Open the section and move the closure to the next phase. The arch is finished and operational immediately, with no curing time required beyond the adhesive flash-off.
The total impact on operations is a few days of partial lobby closure rather than the multi-week impact a solid timber install would require.

A note on acoustics
PU faux wood is a hard surface with limited sound absorption. In a lobby with high ceilings and lots of hard finishes — stone, glass, plaster — the arch can contribute to a slightly live acoustic environment. This isn't always a problem; many hotel lobbies are intentionally designed to have some acoustic presence to feel "alive." But for properties prioritizing quiet conversation at the front desk, consider specifying the arch with a perforated acoustic backing. The factory can incorporate a micro-perforated skin that maintains the wood-grain appearance while adding measurable absorption at the speech-frequency range.
This is a small additional cost at order time but a meaningful upgrade in acoustic comfort. Worth raising with the design team during specification.
Where arches can be overused
A common mistake in hotel lobby design is to arch every ceiling surface in the property. The lobby arch should be a moment of significance, not a repeated motif. If the restaurant has an arch, the bar has an arch, and the corridor has an arch, the original gesture loses its meaning. Reserve the grand arch for the lobby and let the other spaces use simpler ceiling details — a single straight beam, a coffered section, a perimeter cove. The hierarchy makes the lobby arch more effective and the property more visually disciplined overall.
